What is Physiatry?
Physiatry is a medical specialty focused on diagnosing and treating conditions that have resulted in a temporary or permanent loss of function or independence. Unlike other specialties, physiatrists evaluate the entire person, not just the injury or affected area.
Physiatrists address the root cause of your pain or mobility challenges and create a personalized treatment plan to help you regain strength, movement, and independence. Our team’s goal is to maximize patients' ability to participate in activities of daily living and improve their quality of life.
At Gaylord, physiatry is used to assess and treat patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. When needed, our physiatrists also consult with other physicians, such as pulmonologists, primary care providers, and neurologists. Each physiatrist leads a team of specialists that may include physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapists and neuropsychologists, using the latest technology as part of a coordinated treatment plan.
If any of the conditions listed below have left you with persistent pain or limit your activity, this medical specialty can offer a path to relief.

Frequently Asked Questions about Physiatry at Gaylord
What is physiatry/physical medicine and rehabilitation?
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty focused on enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life for individuals with various medical conditions. It encompasses nonsurgical treatment of musculoskeletal, neurological, and other conditions that impact movement and daily activities.
What's the difference between an orthopedist vs. a physiatrist?
Orthopedists specialize in musculoskeletal trauma, sports injuries, fractures, and other conditions that require surgery, whereas a physiatrist focuses on non-surgical treatments for rehabilitation and pain management.

When should I see a physiatrist?
If you experience chronic pain, a recent injury, or difficulty with movement, a physiatrist can evaluate the source of your pain and help determine the best path forward, focusing on minimally invasive treatments.
How is physiatry different from physical therapy?
While physical therapy focuses on specific exercises and therapies, physiatrists oversee the entire rehabilitation process, combining medical interventions with therapy for the best possible outcome.
Is Gaylord Specialty Healthcare considered a pain management clinic?
No. Gaylord physiatrists administer non-surgical treatment methods and help treat the source of a patient’s pain without the use of prescription opioid medication.
