WALLINGFORD, CONNECTICUT, January 6, 2019 — Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, a nonprofit rehabilitation-focused healthcare system, presented its quarterly DAISY Award for Extraordinary Care to New Haven resident Keri Saxton, RN.
In a written nomination, colleague Jody O’Brien described Saxton as skillful, compassionate, and a “true leader” on the hospital’s Milne unit for medically complex patients.
“Keri is usually found in one of her patient’s rooms providing care, support, or teaching to both the patient and their family,” wrote O’Brien.
“She is a strong patient advocate and collaborates with the entire care team to provide the highest level of care. Keri is also wonderful at recognizing areas for improvement. She leads by example and her resourcefulness and assistance with problem-solving help achieve this goal.”
Saxton was also commended by a colleague whose family member was recently hospitalized at Gaylord, citing both her “beautiful, attentive care” and emotional support when the patient was not doing well. A nurse of 15 years, Saxton said that being recognized with the DAISY award is a reminder of the “true value” of the time she spends with her patients.
“I’ve been on the other side as a caregiver when my husband was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. The entire experience has made me a better nurse.” “Gaylord is an amazing place,” she commented. “Together with my coworkers, we are a fierce group of advocates for our patients and their families.”
About the DAISY Award:
The international award was created by the DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died of an auto-immune disease in 1999. Appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion exhibited by each of the nurses who cared for Patrick, the Barnes family created the international award and foundation to say ‘thank you’ to nurses throughout the world.
