How to Choose a Rehabilitation Program
Specialty Hospital FAQs
What is a Specialty Hospital?
Gaylord is a specialty hospital that provides medical treatment and rehabilitation for patients requiring intensive medical care for an extended period of time where the average length of stay is 25 days, ranging from 14 to 28 days for many patients. Patients with complex medical needs are referred to us when a patient at a short-term acute care hospital no longer needs intensive diagnostic services and has a treatment plan. Because of the complexity of the treatment provided, the patient still needs daily physician-directed care.
Does a specialty hospital have outpatient services?
Gaylord offers over 30 outpatient services including physician services, physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapy, psychology, nutritional counseling and lab services, to name a few.
What types of healthcare professionals care for patients at Gaylord?
A team of physicians, nurses, therapists, dietitians, and case managers cares for our patients. Physicians on our medical staff are board certified in a variety of medical specialties, including critical care medicine, internal medicine, pulmonology and physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation). Patients have round-the-clock access to physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other members of their treatment team.
What types of patients are appropriate for Gaylord's Medically Complex Program?
While we care for patients with a wide range of medical issues, patients that may be eligible for admission include:
- Patients with multiple system failures
- Patients dependent on a ventilator who can be successfully weaned
- Patients in need of intensive wound care
- Patients too medically unstable for transfer to a skilled nursing facility
- Patients whose rehabilitation is compromised by acute medical issues
- Patients in the intensive care unit or on medical/surgical floors who have exceeded their length of stay and still require a high acuity level of care.
How is Gaylord different from traditional (short term acute care) hospitals?
Gaylord offers programs that have been specially designed for patients requiring complex medical and rehabilitation services. Unlike a short-term acute care hospital, which focuses on stabilizing a patient’s medical condition, we specialize in providing intensive medical and therapy services to patients with medically complex conditions.
How is Gaylord different from skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes?
Gaylord offers a combination of intensive medical and rehabilitative hospital services. The benefits to patients include briefer lengths of stay in the short-term acute care hospital. We provide a safety net for the most vulnerable patients, assuring that a hospital level of care will be maintained when required.
Does Gaylord accept Medicare and Medicaid?
Gaylord accepts Medicare, Connecticut Medicaid and most private insurances. Our patients generally come from an acute care hospital and still require a hospital level of care.
Gaylord Graduate Program
The Gaylord Graduate Program welcomes back former patients to visit with members of their care team.

Personal Health Records
Your personal Health record or (PHR) is a collection of important information that you maintain about your health and that you continue to update as you receive medical care or treatment. It is a valuable tool to help you play an active role in the quality of your health care. At Gaylord, we understand the importance of maintaining a personal health record and support providing our patients with valuable information to include in your PHR to help support ongoing care and treatment.
At the time of admission to Gaylord Specialty Healthcare, we offer our inpatients the option to receive (an abstract) a collection of pertinent medical record documentation related to their stay, free of charge. After discharge, the information will be saved to a compact disc (CD) and mailed to your home address. You may then share the information contained on the disc with other medical providers.
