Pulmonary/Flu - Nancy's Story

Should you get a flu shot?

At first, Nancy thought she had a bad cold. But things quickly went from bad to worse and she ended up in the hospital in a coma with double pneumonia and lung damage due to the H1N1 flu. She spent about a month and a half in the ICU at the acute care hospital. At one point she was Life Stared to another hospital where she received ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). The ECMO uses a machine to take over the work of the lungs and sometimes the heart.

Nancy nearly died several times during the course of her treatment. She was eventually transferred to Gaylord Hospital where she was quickly fitted with the Passy-Muir® Speaking Valve so she could speak while still on a ventilator. Within days, Nancy was weaned from the ventilator and was actively involved in her rehabilitation. She was able to return home and is now living a normal life. Nancy's physicians felt that her case of the flu was much worse because she hadn't received a flu shot. Hoping to save someone's life Nancy did a short video recapping her illness and encouraging people to get their annual flu shot.
